The new stewards represent every segment of the IAH ramp; with online runners, leads, rampers and other fleet service CSEs all joining the revitalized steward program.
The new stewards will be joining the ranks at IAH just as a new contract is going into effect, a contract that is being called the best in the history of the airline in terms of job security and wages. Despite the success of the contract negotiations, District 141 President Mike Klemm has made it clear that activists within the IAM should not let down their guard; he is certain that individuals within United Airlines management will begin violating the new agreement almost immediately. Many managers and directors mistakenly think that it's their job to try and sabotage the work of United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, who appears to be sincere in his efforts to repair the relationship between workers and management that was shattered during the era of former CEO, Jeff Smisek. The new stewards will help enforce the new contract from these rouge managers, and will also work hard to protect the rights and dignity of Local 811 members.
In order to be as prepared for these challenges as possible, Coordinator David Towe has scheduled steward meetings to discuss the new contract, and how it will impact the members of Local 811. The informational sessions are scheduled for May 11th, (Wednesday). There will be three meetings; in the morning from 9-11 am, then again from12-2 pm, and the afternoon meeting will be held from 4-6 pm at the Local Lodge. (The Local Lodge offices are located at 15355 Vantage Parkway West, Atrium 2, suite 175, Houston, Texas 77032.) All shop stewards are welcome to attend.
David Towe has scheduled future shop steward meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. These monthly gatherings will allow shop stewards to build camaraderie, hone their skills and share war stories on a regular basis.
