THANK YOU to District 141 Education Director, Mac McGovern, and FMLA guru Greg Giles for helping with the July Shop Steward meeting. Instructor Warren Glenn was also present to help explain new provisions of the contract.
The Grievance Committee (Victor Denis Hernandez Jimenez, Greg Hall and Gary Welch) are concerned about the prospect of having only one bid a year, and that fewer GSAPs are being filed, resulting in less safety reporting from IAH workers. In the previous 12 months, there has not been one single discipline-related termination at IAH. Gary Welch asked that shop stewards do more work to educate members about their rights, and encourage their coworkers to file GSAPs when appropriate. Victor Hernandez wanted stewards to know that upcoming EtA changes will allow agents to pick up hours during their vacation. These changes should happen in the next few months.
Due to a recent injury involving a jetway, Victor Hernandez asked for agents to stop giving an "all clear" instruction to jetway operators on jetways that do not have safety cameras in favor of guiding the jetway all the way to it's correct position. The incident was reported to OSHA, and OSHA has asked that a notification re: this incident be publicized, and the Committee has responded by placing the OSHA announcement in bulletin boards and on the Local 811 website.
Shop Stewards Albert Williams, Ron Delgadillo, Luis Fernandez, Scot McClung, "Paul" Pauljose Guerrero and others shared issues from the ramp, including vacation questions, training, safety and staffing concerns. Paul Guerrero discussed the need for agents to be allowed to bid any available work area, and the need for expanded wide body certification.
Local 811 Shop Steward Meetings are great opportunities for stewards to network, form friendships with one another and share ideas. They are organized each month by Shop Steward Coordinator, David Towe.
