Our Jobs
How You Have Helped Make our Jobs Safer and More Secure

Our Union
How You Have Helped Create a Better Union and a better Local Lodge

11/6/2015 - Grievance Committee Reports - Grievance Committee Chairman Victor Hernandez will send out regular reviews of Grievance actions. These reviews will respect the privacy and information of anyone involved with Grievance activities, but will provide a general overview of key information that the membership needs. The reports will be written in "item," or"bulletin" formatting style, like a police blotter. This will prevent them from becoming so long that nobody has time to read them.

11/7/2015 - Safety Audits: The E Board has sent this proposal to the Safety Committee, and will represent an ongoing commitment for safety activists.

11/8/2015 - OJI Committee Recruitment: President Leroy Taylor has identified several candidates for the proposed OJI Committee, and has begun working on incorporating the new committee into the Local Lodge committee structure.

11/8/2015 - Retiree Appreciation: Sarah Monderoy and Victor Hernandez have developed a plan to recognize the continuing usefulness of retirees by the creation of retiree clubs, luncheons and recruitment efforts.

11/10/2015 - Honoring Veterans: The Local will begin finding ways to recognize the service of our veteran coworkers.

11/11/2015: Strategic Scheduling to reduce runway congestion: Vice President of United Airlines' Terminal Ops has stated that these adjustments can only be made by specialized experts that will also factor in many other ways to maximize profits. She will ask them to also consider congestion into their calculations when possible.

11/11/2015 - Christmas Bonus Option: The Local sent the idea to Stephanie Buchanan, who has endorsed it. Buchanan has sent the matter to the Incentives Team for further consideration.

12/18/2015 - Enclosed Canopies Installed at T Point:
  • Agents that move up to become leads should not lose their seniority.
  • Profit sharing should be improved.
  • Part timers should get 1.5 pay for mandatory over time.
  • Staff agents in the areas that they bid.
  • Dedicated staffing for gates instead of task staffing through Staff Manager-style programs.
  • Return grace period for minor tardies, and early swipes.
  • More Full-Time Commitments
  • Health Care Improvements
  • Vacation should wrap around days off
  • Strong language in support of job security, strong and enforceable protections against outsourcing
  • Industry Standard pay or higher
  • Go back to being able to buy and defer vacation. Not one or the other.
  • Shift continuation rules that are the same for part time as they are for full time.
  • Vacation bid needs reworking. Discontinue bidding 2 separate blocks in first round, for example.
  • Automatic cost of living raises
  • Ramp wages cannot be less than 1/300th the pay (including bonuses) of the highest paid executive
  • The opinions of employees should be included when manager and supervisor promotion decisions are made.

Our Contract NEW
Drafting a new partnership with United

  • Keep retirees active
  • Congratulate agents when they top out
  • Recognize the military service of members
  • Celebrate anniversaries
  • Financial Planning Training/Seminars to help augment our pay, and help to budget, to save and even possibly invest.
  • Adopt the section of Greens Rd directly in front of the employee parking area, and install a street sign. This can be done by participating in the Houston "Adopt a Block" program.
  • Benefit "FOD WALKS" in area parks to raise awareness for special causes.
  • Have areas of Terminal B listed with the National Register of Historic Places
  • Create work area committees, BMU Committee, Onlines Committee, Ramp  Committee, etc.
  • Open donation fund for emergencies
  • Hold some meetings at StarBucks
  • Set up and staff tables around the airport, so that shop stewards can answer  questions
  • Keep a legal expert on retainer for legal guidance
  • Register at least one committee as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
  • Conduct equipment safety audits
  • Build and maintain a directory of shop stewards online
  • Make more use of surveys to track things like union and job satisfaction
  • More people need to be going to the monthly Business Meetings. The Local should develop incentives and outreach campaigns to attract more participation.
  • Special OJI Committee to help guide agents after an injury
  • Many agents want more information re: pay and overtime rules, and a forum to ask specific questions.
  • Surveys to allow the membership to help shape the upcoming Contract are needed from the District.
  • The Grievance Committee should present regular reports to the members
  • Payroll Deduct cash advances, meal purchases
  • Create union/manager councils to solve problems, set goals, and move ideas
  • Paint the "Tow-To" marks in Alphabetical Order
  • Correct Bus Issues
  • Return to dedicated gate staffing, which facilitates team building and predictable staffing levels.  Also prevents hold outs which benefits the customer.
  • Provide enclosed canopies for the T Point, which will be more suited for the winter months.
  • Wifi boosters and charging stations in break areas would help agents look up flights and conduct other necessary work tasks on personal devices.
  • Incentive bonuses would make a bigger difference if we had the option of deferring them until the holidays. That way, we would get one larger check at Christmastime, instead of small bumps that we won't always notice.
  • We need to have a way to get potholes fixed. Esp. ones on gates that catch cart wheels.
  • Strategic scheduling of departures to relieve runway congestion.
  • Move to only one type of seniority date of hire, instead of three: BIDDING SENIORITY / PAY SENIORITY / DATE OF HIRE SENIORITY

11/1/2015 - Bus service issues:  are being discussed jointly between the company, the Grievance Committee and First Transit. Solutions are currently being developed. For more on this, see the "Latest News" under the "Home" tab, or follow the link: http://www.local811houston.org/latest-news/bus-audit-results
No deadline: company timetable

11/2/2015 - Enclosed Canopies for T Point: Safety advocates working with Mark Hall have begun asking the company to provide enclosed canopies for the T Point, arguing that this is necessary from a safety standpoint. Enclosed canopies would also help protect personal belongings, paperwork and other items from blowing out of the area and becoming FOD. Cold water spray in winter is inevitable, and enclosures are needed to protect workers from this. No Deadline: Completed on 12/17/2015

11/4/2015 - Financial Planning services: Consumer Credit counselling and low cost insurance options are often available to members through the Employee Assistance Program. Local 811 will work to develop new ways to inform members about these benefits. Deadline for posting improved information: 11/30/2015

11/4/2015 - An online shop steward directory is a good idea, and our online team will start working on it over the next few weeks. This can be a time consuming project, but should be completed within two months. The information will probably be placed on the Grievance Committee Page. No Deadline: long term project.

11/4/2015 - Job satisfaction and internal union satisfaction surveys will be a great way to determine how well the overall local is performing. These will be developed over the next few weeks and promoted over social networks and email. Deadline: 11/30/2015

11/4/2015 - OJI Committee: President Leroy Taylor is currently working to develop an OJI Committee. Deadline for recruiting staff: 12/1/2015 - Completed on 11/8/2015

11/4/2015 - Pay and overtime questions: The 'IAH Virtual Union Board' Facebook page is the best place to ask these questions. Every member of the Grievance Committee and E Board regularly visit the page, and questions can be viewed by other agents that share the same concerns. No Deadline: Existing program

11/4/2015 - Retiree Appreciation: Sarah Monderoy has begun looking for new ways to recognize retirees. Some of the ideas being discussed are special ceremonies and luncheons, obtaining retirement lists from the company, and finding meaningful roles for retirees within the local. Deadline for beginning project: 11.10.2015 Completed: 11.8.2015

11/5/2015 - Grievance Committee Reports:
Victor Hernandez will develop a way to describe many of the activities of the Grievance Committee.

11/7/2015 - Safety Audits:
This proposal has been adopted by the E Board and sent to the Safety Committee. Deadline: Completed

11/11/2015 - Christmas Bonus Option:
